Thrive, not Just Survive

Daniel with his siblings in front of their new home
Our staff became aware of Daniel’s situation, a 15-year-old student who feared his house would fall in on his family. His father had abandoned the family, leaving them on a tiny piece of land with a mud-built structure. When our staff went to visit, they learned that Daniel was the only child in the family in school. Daniel and all his siblings were enrolled onto our scholarship program where they receive two hot meals each day and training on our vocational farm.

Daniel was a quick learner and hard worker. He developed an interest in pigs in particular and saved his small earnings to buy a piglet. He raised the piglet to maturity and sold it for a nice profit. With the profits, he purchased a calf and bricks to build his family a safe home.

Daniel then raised the calf to maturity selling it for the three calves pictured above. His mom also works on our demonstration farm and has been implementing what she has learned, too. She recently enrolled in one of our saving circles where members save small amounts regularly to cope with emergencies, build capital, and support genuine self-reliance. Daniel’s mom now has a safe home, and she is able to pay school fees for all but one of her children. Thank you for providing HEED with the tools to empower lives!
