Pathways to Transformation Update: Health

Kirabo, 8 years old, cut her wrist with a machete and

had severe loss of blood. Nurse Pamela was able to

stitch the wound and provide IV medications to spare

her life. The nearest hospital would have been a12-mile

trip on a bumpy, dirt road via motorcycle taxi.

COVID-19 brought many changes with it including motivation for HEED to utilize the skills of our school nurse to open a community clinic.  The clinic now provides the only skilled health care in a 12-mile radius and serves a population of about 6,500 people. Though schools are currently closed, the clinic is in full swing.

Last month our clinical officer, Pamela, treated 55 students before the schools closed, 86 members from the community, 22 staff members and is following up with 15 patients in their homes to ensure a healthy recovery. All this intervention is happening where there previously was no access to a properly trained health worker.

Thank you for supporting improved health!
